The Box

About

After Surreal I began writing another EP, but I ended up procrastinating for too long and could never find the energy to record it. Some of these songs ended up having parts used in other future songs (such as Southampton and Recovery).

However, before the second EP was written I wrote a song called ‘The Box’ and completely finished it. Since I had no new music to release in 2018 I decided to release The Box as a single.

I’m a mess, I’m a bore, I’ll give you love, but you probably want more.
Maybe we could work out? But if we don’t I lose out.

What’s in the box?
What’s in the box?

Honestly, it’s lost on me. All I wanna do is rip off your clothes.
Like I said I’m a mess, but don’t you dare tell your friends, shh!

What’s in the box?
What’s in the box?

What’s in the box?
What’s in the box?

The writing process

The Box was written based on an idea a friend once told me during band practice when I was 14; “You could write a song on anything, hell you could not even say what it is for the whole song and leave people guessing.”

I love the synth’s part in this song it sounds really upbeat and it’s just a fun song to play since it doesn’t have the typical chord structure that most songs do.

It’s also the first song I wrote to feature modulation (a key change) towards the end of the track.

My only regret is that it wasn’t a longer track.

Other notes

  • The Box was the only song released in 2018. I like to have new music coming out every year, but I don’t think I’ll ever have just one song released on its own ever again. Basically I’d like to release at least 4 or 5 songs per year.
  • The music video is mostly free stock footage combined with the simplistic branding I still use to this day. I like this branding, because the white represents a clean pallet and the art/music can be any genre or sound that I feel like putting out.
  • After the first EP I decided to no longer double my vocals due to agreeing with the feedback I received at the time. Therefore The Box was the first song without the doubled vocals and me singing ‘normally’.
  • This is a fun song to play live. The guitar riff during the chorus feels really cool to play.
  • Despite the point above it may fall out of the set a bit due to newer songs taking priority.
  • The Box was recorded the exact same way as the Surreal EP was.
